How to Set Up a Free US-Based RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) for Various Purposes

Creating a free RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) in the United States can be useful for tasks such as bypassing geo-restrictions, testing web applications from a different location, or having a remote desktop for personal or professional use.

Follow this step-by-step guide to set up a free RDP using Microsoft Azure:

Step 1: Choose a Cloud Provider

Several cloud service providers offer free trials or services with limited features, such as AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. In this guide, we’ll use Microsoft Azure as it offers a free tier with ample resources.

Step 2: Sign Up for Microsoft Azure

  1. Visit Microsoft Azure’s website.
  2. Click the “Start free” button to begin signing up.
  3. Follow the steps to create your account, which will involve verifying your identity and providing the required details.

Step 3: Access the Azure Portal

After signing up and logging into your Azure account, you will be taken to the Azure portal. From here, you’ll be able to manage your resources. Navigate to the Virtual machines section through the side menu.

Step 4: Create a Virtual Machine (VM)

  1. Click on “Create a virtual machine” to start building your instance.
  2. Configure the VM settings:
    • - Region: Choose a US region for a US-based RDP.
    • - Operating System: Select Windows.
    • - Instance Size: Select a configuration based on your needs (free-tier eligible).
    • - Authentication: Set up either a password or an SSH key.
  3. Once you’ve selected your options, complete the process by following the on-screen prompts and reviewing the summary.

Step 5: Wait for the VM to Deploy

Once you finalize your virtual machine configuration, Azure will begin deploying it. This process usually takes a few minutes.

Step 6: Connect to Your RDP

  1. After the VM is deployed, it will appear on your Azure dashboard.
  2. Click on the VM to view its details, including options to connect.
  3. Download the provided RDP file.
  4. Open the RDP file using Remote Desktop Connection on your local computer.
  5. Enter the username and password you set during configuration.
  6. Click “Connect” to establish the remote desktop connection.

Step 7: Start Using Your RDP

Once connected, you can use the remote desktop just like a regular Windows environment. Feel free to install software or perform any tasks as you would on a local PC.

Step 8: Manage and Disconnect

When you are finished using the RDP, ensure you log out securely to avoid any unauthorized access. You can stop or delete the VM instance from your Azure portal if you no longer need it to prevent additional charges.
